Resting in the Lord - Part 2

By Teri Dorrell

Daily Time and Devotion with the Lord

How can I rest? Isaiah 58:2a says, “They seek me daily, and delight to know my ways.” We need to make a commitment to get up earlier! Or decide not to eat breakfast until we have been fed from God’s Word. Proverbs 8:17b tells us,  “Those that seek me early shall find me.”

His delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season [rest]; his leaf also shall not wither [rest]; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper [rest].
— Psalm 1:2 KJV

Have you ever noticed that the more tired a child becomes the harder it is for him to finally get to sleep? All seven of my children have done that, so I was always careful to make sure they got plenty of sleep, whether they wanted it or not. The same is true for you and me. We get busy and go, go, go, and do, do, do, never taking time to rest. It will be that much harder for us when we finally wake up and see our need to rest.

Trust in the Lord

Just as we need to trust that our homes are safe at night so we can sleep, we need to trust in the Lord so we can rest! “In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion” (Psalm 71:1 KJV).  We need to give our thoughts and worries to Him. Part of trusting is seeing ourselves for how small we are and how big God is. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7 KJV).

In order for me to trust, I have to let go, stop worrying, and constantly remind myself that God is very capable! I do this by singing! Troy sometimes will ask me if I am singing for his benefit or mine! “But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying” (Psalm 70:5 KJV). Joy comes from trusting. “But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them” (Psalm 5:11 KJV).

We as women work so hard on the outward—focusing on our appearance and responsibilities—that we totally neglect our rest.  What peace and joy we could have if we would spend as much time on resting in the Lord.
